Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola (, also US: , French: [emil zɔla]; 2 April 1840 – 29 September 1902) was a French novelist, playwright, journalist, the best-known practitioner of the literary school of naturalism, and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalization of France and in the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, which is encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse…! Zola was nominated for the first and second Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901 and 1902.
Helene Grandjean, datter af Ursule Mouret, barnebarn af Adelaide Fouque og søster til Francois Mouret (Erobringen af Plassans) har efter sin mands død bosat sig i pariserforstaden Passy med sin 11-årige, svagelige datter Jeanne. Hun lever tilbagetrukkent, og omgås kun to gamle vennen, præsten fader Jouve og handelsmanden Rambaud. Da Jeanne får et anfald af sin sygdom, møder hun en nabo, den gifte læge Henri Deberle, og de forelsker sig hovedkulds, omend i begyndelsen uudtalt. Jeanne, der har arvet bedstemoderens egocentriske og jaloux temperament, kan imidlertid ikke acceptere, at moderen ikke mere kun er til for hende.
